Here’s one of the cast iron benches in Albuquerque’s Old Town central plaza. This is a scanned image made from film taken with the Leica M7. One thing to notice is the amount of latitude (shades of luminance from white to black) still possible in modern film. Look at the details both in the shadows and in the decorations on the white-painted cast iron of the bench itself. This crunched-down version for the web doesn’t really do it justice.
Latitude of film, especially in the shadow detail is one of the reasons many big-time Hollywood features are still shot in film.
